Development of the prices
Prices of books by Lolita Nikolova (author and editor)

Comparing prices of academic books

"Academic fraud appears to be on the increase across the world, in developing and developed countries alike. It is a
costly threat to societies, to their efficient operation and to public trust in the reliability and security of their institutions
..."
(Eckstein, Max A (2003). Combating academic fraud. Towards a culture of integrity. International Institute for
Educational Planning: Paris.)

We still do not know whether overpricing is an academic fraud. But for sure the enormous differences in prices reflect
disbalance that need a deep analysis and interpretations. We have books which are replications of others' works and
have been sold as original works. We have pseudo-books (in fact article-like compilations) that have been sold as
books. The freedom of the publishing houses is the one side of the coin. The other side is that the libraries have
limited funds and such books take without any reasons the academic budget of many library. This is an academic
problem since we do have the free Internet opportunity for publication, and usually authors who publish with some
publish houses do not spend time and effort for Internet. Today the publishing houses especially of the academic
literature need to take care about ethics, because we are on the edge when the professional authors in many cases
offer much more quality products that the academic authors. The difference between the academic authors and the
professional authors is that usually they are not paid - but this is the choice of the honest academicians. Once the
academic authors begin to publish as professional authors, usually early or late comes the corruption. The reason is
also clear - the science is not a chain of sensations, but a hard work to resolve interesting for small group of people
problems. The academic authors that have been trying to publish sensations, usually go over the borderline of
academism.

Extremely overpriced. The book
is based on already published
article by other authors and
poses itself a question of ethics.
This is the second case of
Todorova when contracts a book
based on basic other authors'
original works. The first was the
scandalous book on the Copper
Age axes which replicated the
original works of E. Chernykh.

Tip: The researchers can order
the book through interlibrary loan
and to copy the plates since the

Overview by Lolita Nikolova
Paperback. Price US $76.00
The price looks to me fine. It is a
synthesis of most recent
prehistoric research on the
Balkans and good orientation
about the level especially of
interpretations. It is valuable for
any academic library.
