June 1 - July 22, 2009

The University of Utah's 2009 summer program in archaeological field
techniques will be held at Range Creek Canyon in east central Utah. Jointly
sponsored by the Department of Anthropology and the Utah Museum of
Natural History, this course offers students the opportunity to learn modern
archaeological field and lab techniques in an ongoing field research
program. Under the direction of Dr. Duncan Metcalfe, participants in the
program will also receive training in archaeological method and theory.

Archaeology in Utah can be divided into five chronological periods
characterized by particular interests and activities:
1776-1875: Early Explorations and Observations;
1875-1910: Institution- and University-sponsored, Exploring and Collecting
Expeditions
1910-1947: Beginnings of Professional Archaeology
1947-1980: The Jennings Era
1980-Present: Hunter-Gatherers and Ethnoarchaeology, Public and Cultural
Resource Management, (CRM) Archaeology.
